British Film Institute partners with Hillside Beach Club for its first ever international ‘BFI Summer screenings’

May 2018Hillside Beach Club the five-star luxury resort located in a private bay in Fethiye, Turkey, has announced a partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI) – the UK’s lead organisation for film – for its first international ‘BFI Summer screenings’.

Taking place in May half term (Thursday 24 May – Wednesday 30 May, 2018), the event will include a long weekend of film screenings and interactive workshops, curated by the BFI, for both adults and children staying at the resort, to educate them on the creation and history of film.

There will be a combination of classic summer films screened in various idyllic areas of Hillside Beach Club throughout the course of the long weekend for adults to enjoy. Will Massa, Curator of Contemporary Fiction Film, BFI, will be bringing the films to life with screen talks, giving special insight into the classic film selection.

Films will include Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights at the relaxing adults-only Silent Beach, Wes Anderson’s underwater adventure comedy The Life Aquatic on Hillside’s private sailing boat, and Hollywood hit La La Land at the resort’s iconic main beach.

Children’s workshops will take place throughout the event, educating children on filmmaking, production skills, creative storytelling, script writing as well as prop and costume making. The fun and practical workshops will give children the opportunity to create a short ‘adventure’ based film, edited by experts from BFI, which will then be enjoyed by the whole family at a celebratory screening on the last day.

There will also be family film nights complete with popcorn and beanbags showing classics such as Swallows and Amazons, Paddington and BFA.

Will Massa, Curator of Contemporary Fiction Film at BFI commented: ‘Settling into your cinema seat before a film starts is one of life’s great pleasures, but screening a series of classics under the stars at Hillside will be unbeatable. I can’t wait to dig deeper into the films with the audience, discussing their history, impact and enduring magic.”

Full list of adult films:

1- City Lights, directed by Charlie Chaplin (1931) – 86 mins

Screening at Hillside Resort’s Silent Beach A hapless but resilient tramp falls in love with a blind flower seller and does whatever he can to prevent her and her grandmother being evicted from their home. Featuring Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp character, City Lights is both incredibly moving and uproaringly funny.

2- The Life Aquatic, directed by Wes Anderson (20041961) – 152 mins

Screening on a boat in the bay of Hillside Beach Club Join oceanographer Steve Zissou as he embarks on a mission to hunt down and kill the rare shark that devoured a member of his crew. Bill Murray’s at the helm, Owen Wilson is his son, Brazilian samba legend Seu Jorge remixes Bowie classics – what’s not to like? This is a truly madcap underwater adventure from the master of mirth Wes Anderson.

3- La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle (2016) – 128 mins

Screening on Hillside Resort’s Main Beach The idea of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone singing and dancing their way across the silver screen is enough to draw you to this film. A pair are drawn together by their common desire to do what they love. But as success mounts, the dreams they worked so hard to maintain in each other threaten to rip them apart. This is Damien Chazelle’s ultimate homage to classic Hollywood musicals.

4- Amélie, directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (2001) – 129 mins

Screening at Open Air Cinema Amélie is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love. This film is filled with airy whimsical charm the way that a chocolate soufflé is filled with air.

5- Four Weddings and a Funeral, directed by Mike Newell – 117 mins

Screening at Open Air Cinema Seemingly giving rise to the popularity of British rom-coms and launching the career of Hugh Grant, the Oscar-nominated Four Weddings and a Funeral documents the romantic misadventures of a group of friends who attend, you guessed it, four weddings and a funeral.
